Rain, rain….RAIN! YAY!

I love rain! I love it even more now that we collect it for our daily lifestyle. It rained yesterday and we got home to find the barrels filling wonderfully. I was excited. Fresh rain water for fresh baths and such. I love seeing the barrel beside the porch fill up. It makes it easier to get a bucket of water to flush the toilet or wash dishes. It is nice!

I heard it pouring rain in the middle of the night. I woke up briefly and heard it pouring from the overflow. The overflow! That meant the barrel was full! I wanted to go outside and just splash it everywhere.

We are still in the middle of apples. Chris is making fruit leather today and I will be canning LOTS of juice when I get home. And the jelly, I will be making some jelly as well. 12 fresh jars of jelly and all those gallons of pure apple juice! Delicious!

It is due to rain through most of the weekend I think. We won’t be able to get out and cut trees or work on the root cellar. I guess we will be working on the bedroom this weekend.

Canning pics coming soon.

Picture Overload (thing needing done)

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

This is areas and things that we will be working on the next few weeks, that HAVE to get done. I will post pictures as we get the work done.

The root cellar needs work and it is our first big project. We have to repair and seal the concrete, close in the window area, put up a good door, put a roof on...after we decide upon a roof. Chris wanted a platform type thing on top, I want a dirt mound with grass planted. We shall see!

Picture Overload (Pets)

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I have been promising pictures for awhile now and finally have them edited and ready to load. So prepare yourself for a picture overload in the next few posts.

Yesterday, Chris got the apples cut up. I helped with more when I got off work. I have decided to make juice out of them and then fruit leather with the pulp. We never have enough juice and I have plenty of applesauce. Yes, to the question, I do can the applesauce normally. I may make a few jars of jelly out of this run as well. We have a lot of other jelly and jam, but not any apple jelly left.

I got to practice the banjo for an hour or so yesterday evening. We are going to start canning the apple juice this evening, so I doubt I will have time for anything else. Enjoy the pics!

We had another great weekend. Today I have about 3 bushels of apples that need to be used in some form. Chris is going to get them all cut up today and I am going to make applesauce out of them. I have plenty of dry apples and even canned apples for pies, so I guess I will make applesauce and I can use that to eat as is, use for fried pies or even applesauce stack cake. I have green beans to can as well. Although we did not have a garden, Don and Johnny, as well as Kim and Bob are keeping me in plenty of veggies and fruit. It will be muscadine time before you know it. I am so thankful for the gifts they have given to us.

Friday I went to a fish fry at Amanda’s job. It was fun, but man you could really tell the difference in the Watts Bar fish as opposed to the small lake fish we caught a week ago. It is amazing how the water can give fish such a different taste. We got home late and going to bed never felt so good. Saturday Chris went fishing and ended up breaking his rod. Actually breaking it. I felt sorry for him, as we cannot really afford new rods right now and he loves to fish. I think I will take my reel off my rod and let him have that one until we can afford to get another one. I tell ya though…they do NOT make Zebco’s like they use to. It use to be my favorite rod and reel and I cannot even begin to tell how many fish I have caught with a Zebco 22, 33 or 404. Literally hundreds of catfish a night. Now they are POS’s pretty much.  Do they make good rods and reels anymore? He mended it but broke it again in a second attempt on Sunday.

So he caught no fish, but I sure enjoyed my time putting my jigsaw puzzle together and relaxing. Amanda wanted us to go out with her and then watch Perrin while she went out to buy school supplies. WOW…school supplies for my YOUNGEST grandson. That can make you feel old. So we went over and watched the young lad, who had just been punished for having horrible behavior as he got his hair cut. Not sure why this child is so terrified of getting his hair cut, but he literally has to be held down. Amanda had to trim it up at home afterwards and I walked in as he was crying, screaming and begging her not to cut his ears off. He was certainly in a mood.

Sunday was nice. I got about 5 loads of laundry done and hung out on the line. I cleaned out the dresser, washed it down and refolded the clothes and put in there. For some reason it has some weird mildew smell after we moved. I washed it all down good with pine cleaner and a bit of bleach and it seems to have taken care of it. More puzzle and banjo and I CAN PLAY WILDWOOD FLOWER! So yeah I know you all do not believe me and I have to be honest and say I cannot play it very well, but I have it memorized without having to look at the tabs and will get better each time I practice it. And per request I hope to record me playing a few songs and put them up on this site so you all can be tortured just as much as Chris is. LOL I am really enjoying the banjo and love my lessons and what I have learned so far. I started learning Rocky Top as well, so maybe in the next few days I will be up to about 10 songs!

Don came to visit and brought the apples. We had a very nice visit on the porch. The hens are laying a dozen eggs a day and that is great. That will really help out and I am thrilled they are laying good now that they are settled and happier in the new coop. Cutie is doing wonderful inside and is much happier. I imagine Azrael may in up inside when winter comes. She is the same age as Cutie. Flat Cat is old as well but has never been inside so I guess he would prefer outside. Birds have built a nest in our chimney. I think it is doves, but am not completely sure. One of the eggs fell to the fireplace and there was nothing inside the shell so I am thinking they have hatched out. They are sure making a mess in the living room floor by knocking the soot down the chimney. I was going to try to run them off, but felt sorry for them, so I will leave them there and then get the nest out before we get hooked up for winter.

Chris cut more wood this past week. The part I absolutely hate is coming up and my back dreads it. LOL We need to get all of the wood cut up and haul it to the house and split and stack it. I dread it because we do not have a truck and we have to pull it in a large utility wagon that Chris has. I kinda wish we had a horse, a work horse that we could use for things like that. Until then maybe I can convince my son in law to come and help haul it all to the house. I like to cut the wood and don’t mind stacking it as well. But the hauling and splitting is a bit hard on me.

ANTS! I have to update about the ant problem. Although they are still there and are more outside now than in, we still see them once in awhile. BUT, I did put out the cornmeal and I can attest that there has been less in the house than before. I know this for a fact because before there was no way to leave a few bags of apples in the floor for a little while before you could process them. I left them in the floor and no ants got in them. Also, none have been getting into Cutie’s cat food as well. So, that is getting much better. I will be putting more cornmeal out and even some on the porches as well, since there has been a serious decrease in them since I put it out. That is great news as I do not have to worry about the animals or grandkids getting into something poison.

We have not heard anything yet from Hazel. It is kind of, well not really, but we got a slight chuckle, out of the fact that we have to drive by her house when we go to town and this weekend Chris noticed her porch swing had fallen on one side. She always sat in that swing and no one ever sat in it unless she was sitting there as well, so we can only hope she was sitting in it when it fell. At least we take some pathetic glory out of imagining her sitting in it when it fell. Sad creatures we are! LOL

I do have lots of pics taken, believe it or not. I will work on getting those edited and get them up as soon as possible, so check back~ Have a good week everyone!

July 23, 2009

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Well yesterday I was so behind at work since I missed Tuesday that it took me all day to get halfway caught up. Amanda was very late getting home from work and we got home late. Don’s sister made it trough her surgery OK and although they told her she had about a 20% chance, she is doing well and may be heading home tomorrow. Dom is back home from Nashville and Andy, their son, found out he does not have to head back to Washington State until Saturday, which is wonderful. I really like him and we are having him down at the house tomorrow evening.

We ended up taking Perrin home with us for the night. Amanda has her entry exam for college today and we wanted her to be able to study and rest. That plus the fact that Perrin begged and was thrilled to pack his bag to go to the Broken House. He discovered “skeeters” yesterday, although he prefers to call them “Skeetoes”. After I got bit I was putting alcohol on it and he asked if “Malkmahall” was good for “skeetoes”. Chris read him some books that were often read to him as a child and he was ready to go to bed. He generally sleeps on a feather bed in the floor beside our bed. He loves it there and was asleep in no time at all. This morning he was sleeping when I got up to go to work. Last night I slept fairly well. I was not stressing about things. Of course I have our legal fees in the back of my mind that we will have to pay and the fact that we need to come up with $1500.00 more before October for our down payment on the farm. I just have to remain positive and do all I can.

Chris let me know earlier that our main egg customer is back. He bought a lot of eggs from us every week when we were at the trailer and then attempted to buy them when we lived at the other house, but the driveway made it impossible for him to make it to the house regularly. Chris called to tell him where we are now and he is thrilled to drive down and pick eggs up from us like before. That thrills me as now we have enough to sell eggs regularly, enough to eat ourselves, share with Don and Johnny and the chickens will pay for themselves!

I am planning to take a day off work soon. Not for court or moving or working or anything else other than to take a day and spend the entire day relazing at the farm. I desperately need that. I have a nice cold watermelon in the Spring that I paln to eat on the next few days and there is still much of the farm I have not had a chance to explore yet. I want to get out there with a camera and see everything.

I have to go to Nashville on Monday and pick up a client and take him to Rising Fawn to Camp Lookout. Then next Friday I have to pick him up at camp and take him back to Nashville. The good thing on that day is my job will pay for us to go to the Rainforest Cafe’ and the mall and I can go to Earthbound and buy more of the skirts there that I love so much!

Today I am going to take more pics at the farm and post them tomorrow. I also plan to take a walk and get pics of areas I have not posted yet.  I have some fresh potatoes and okra to cook for supper and also plan to get the food dryer all set up so I can dry some beans and apples this next week.

Our rain water system is working pretty well at this time and we are getting enough water from it for everything we need. And thank goodness there is always the saftey net of having the Spring and the Brannon Brook just in case we run low on rain for a spell.

Thank you Don in Canada for your friendship and support. And thank so much to my City Data friends who have come here. I am glad I have a place to update everyone and hope I will soon have time to contact others and give them the link here. I owe some emails and will get to them as soon as possible.

Court July 21, 2009

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

What a LONG day in court. I just thought my nerves were shot dealing with this the past few months. Nothing compared to yesterday. I was physically ill for two days, could not eat yesterday and have only slept a few hours the past few nights. It was draining, totally draining, but may finally be over.

We had subpoenaed 5 witnesses. Hazel showed up with 9 people. Don and Johnny came in and sat with us. Our case was called a little before 11am. My attorney asked that the witnesses not be in the court room during testimony. I glanced back and saw a look of total anger from all of them. They wanted to be in there to hear the whole thing and feed off of each others testimony. The Judge agreed and all the witnesses had to leave the courtroom.

Poor Chris was put on the stand first and I felt so sorry for him. Hazel’s attorney drilled him but he did great. Then the police officer was brought in. I was unaware that he had taken pictures of the property and he presented those. He was honest in everything he said and it was all in our favor. After him was the investigator that was called when Hazel claimed I stole 300 cedar boards. He testified that he called me and I offered to allow him to search my farm, I told him I took 12-15 cedar boards that Jimmy had given to me and they were at my farm, I offered to being them back and was genuinely shocked when he said they were claiming 300 cedar boards were missing. I told him there were never that many cedar boards in the workshop. After this, we broke for lunch. When we returned, the remaining witnesses were ordered outside the courtroom and my attorney rested his case for the time being.

Hazel’s attorney called her to the stand. She ended up being one of OUR best witnesses. She was all about being the poor old lady who was a victim and just “wanted it all to end”. UNTIL….my attorney started questioning her. She turned it off like a faucet and became a snippy evil little woman. I counted 5 bold face lies that she told under oath. I was shocked and could not believe she was lying in court. She complained about where the outhouse was, not because it was not covered properly but because she knows what is there under the ground. She admitted it was covered and there was no odor. She complained about the cedar boards.  My attorney chewed her up and spat her out on it. Basically he got out of her the boards were there for 2 years (which is a lie because me and Chris hauled the boards to the workshop for Jimmy in April 2008) and said Jimmy put them there. But the main thing is, she was drilled in a way that she admitted she had no clue how many boards were there and there could have been less than 20. He also got out of her in court that the “Bob” has his horses there, there is no written agreement, he is not paying her any money, she don’t know when he will pay her, she trusts him and he is honest, he will pay her when he gets ready, she made him power of attorney over her estate AND he has a lot to gain from being in her will.

Then “John” was called in, who supposedly bought the $3000 in cedar boards. He was our BEST witness. In his testimony my attorney pulled out that he was given two receipts, one was written out in Hazel’s handwriting and given to him before he even gave any money to her saying he gave her $3000. BUT….for some very odd reason, mine and Chris’ names were written at the bottom of the receipt. He was asked why and he said he did not know. My attorney said “was it so you would know who to lie about today?” John could not say anything much. THEN…he said he never looked at all the wood before he bought it but he did look at what was in the workshop and believe it or not he was so bumfuzzled at this point that he said there were less than 20 boards in the workshop. Don was called in and testified that he was in the workshop in September and there were never 300 boards in there. He said we left the property in better shape than it was when we moved onto it.

My attorney rested as well as her attorney and the other three witnesses, including Bob who was dying to get on stand, were called back in but the best part of it is, they had to stay outside ALL day and never even got to tell the lies they were prepared to tell.

The Judge awarded us the money Hazel was supposed to pay from the last court, the money she agreed to pay. He did not award additional damages, which is fine with me BUT…there was no charge for court and Hazel has to pay for half of the subpoenas, which means she basically has to pay for Bob, Bill and his brother to sit outside and not benefit her in any way.  In addition, her attorney asked for $3000 credit for the cedar boards. The Judge said that everyone testified there was less than 20 boards, that I was questioned by the investigator, who testified that when he called me I was shocked when he said 300 boards and that I admitted I took 12-15 boards that Jimmy had given to me. Also, that he believes Jimmy gave them to me and maybe Hazel did not know, men do not always tell their wives everything. He said I offered to take them back, let them search my farm, etc. and he has been a Judge long enough to know that a thief and a liar is not going to offer to bring something back like that and offer to have their property searched, take a lie detector and all of that. He said he believes they were given to me, I took them, there were less than 20 and there will be no credit given for the cedar and he don’t want to hear about it again. So that above all else made me very happy.

So we get the original amount agreed on, he ordered her to release the check, told her if she really wanted it over, this was her chance to have that. We are supposed to have the check in 15 days because she has 10 days to appeal and then 5 days to release it. We paid for a court recorder to transcript the hearing so there is really no way she can win an appeal as it will go before the same Judge and he was not very pleased with her. So it looks like it may be over…finally. I don’t have to worry every day about those cedar boards and this weekend Chris and Don are going to take the boards to his workshop and let them dry out good and then they are going to build me a cedar chest to put at the foot of my bed to store quilts in. It will be something that has a story behind it that I can leave to Lakota when the time comes. I plan on writing the story of the cedar boards up and putting it in the cedar chest so she will have it some day.

This entire ordeal has really taken a toll on me.  When I get some things caught up at work, I plan to take a few days off to just hang out at the farm and do nothing. I am tired and am still having difficulty eating and keeping it down.  Chris and I both have been so stressed and yesterday really took a toll on us. Our case was not over until 3pm. 5 hours!

It saddens me at times that Jimmy approached us and made the agreement so Hazel would have someone to watch over her and not allow someone to manipulate her and take everything she owns.  We were unable to fulfill that request and she is being manipulated by someone Jimmy told me himself that he did not trust. But I do feel we did everything we could. Of course now we have to worry about all of the legal fees. But things will come in time. We finally feel like we are free to focus completely on our new home and get things done that need to be done before Winter.

I appreciate everyone that has stood by us, gave so many well wishes and supported us in this struggle. It looks like finally we have reached the end and we are pleased with the outcome. She cannot ignore the Judge’s order a second time. Seeing Hazel lie in court taught me a lot, seeing her turn from sweet and innocent to evil in a split second taught me a lot. Being accused of stealing something like that cedar when you know beyond any doubt you are innocent…hurts. I am glad that was addressed in court and is over with. We have been weakened some by all of this, but in all honesty, what has happened this past year has strengthened us. We never gave up, we never argued over it, it never affected our relationship in a negative way, it made us even closer than ever before and we learned so much from it. Now, it is time to take the experience, grow from it….and move on. Thankfully we have a beautiful farm that will provide us with that opportunity.

July 20, 2009

Monday, July 20th, 2009

The only thing wrong this weekend was it did not last long enough. Friday, me and Amanda had a very hard week at work, so we decided to order Chinese and relax. We got home a little late and I enjoyed practicing the banjo for an hour or so before the skeeters got so bad I had to go inside and go to bed. Friday night there were coyote issues in the field and we had to bring Cletus in for the night. Sadie will general stay away from them, but Cletus will chase the entire pack half the night. I brought Cutie back into the house because she was not doing so well outside.  She is antisocial and found a hiding place in the shed and had lost weight (not that she needed to weigh 15 pounds lol). I brought her in and got her some canned food that is high in protein to fatten her up a little bit. I think we will just keep her inside as she has been there all her life and is not very excited about being outside.

We got to sleep late on Saturday morning. It was nice and cool and staying in bed until 8am was just wonderful! We had fresh peaches for breakfast and then went to Devin’s 6th birthday party. That was fun and although Perrin was in one of those, do not look at me, talk to me or take my picture moods (that Devin picked up on and began following suit). Everyone had a good time and he loved his gifts. Chris went fishing in the afternoon and caught only one decent size brim. While he was gone I picked the banjo. I am so thankful I am actually learning new songs because playing Amazing Grace all the time was getting on everyone’s nerves. I learned Amazing Grace because it was Jimmy’s favorite song. He wanted me to play it at his funeral. Sadly he died before I even began to learn how to play the song well. Every time I play it now, I think of him. The lessons are really helping me and I can play Cripple Creek, Worried Man Blues, Rocky Top and a few others. Not perfectly of course, but enjoyable at least. I also worked on a jigsaw puzzle for awhile and enjoyed time doing nothing but relaxing. I have stressed so much about court this week that I needed some time to relax.

Sunday we got to sleep until 8am. It was VERY cool and this weather is just odd.  The day was beautiful. We had fresh eggs for breakfast and ate on the front porch. The porch is like an extra room in the house. I understand now why you always saw the family hanging out on the porch in the old days. It is cooler out there and a bit brighter than inside the house. We look at it now as the most used room in the house. We were discussing what wonderful farm thing we needed to do for the day and Amanda called. She wanted to go fishing with Perrin….and of course she wanted us to go as well. My friend from work has a huge lake on her property that her husband built last year. It is stocked with all kinds of fish and is way out in the country. They are great people and said we can fish there anytime we want to. So we headed over there and Perrin had a great time fishing. Chris caught a nice bass. I caught a huge catfish and then caught another one just 5 minutes later. Perrin was fishing on the dock and holler “I caught one!” Amanda ran over to discover that he had a very small fish. The thing had grabbed the bait, was not even hooked and Perrin jerked it up on the dock and picked it up. Now that is the sign of a real fisherman! We brought the fish home, well except for Perrin’s, and I began cleaning them. I hate cleaning catfish. LOL I don’t mind skinning and cleaning about any form of food that exists, but catfish are something I just dislike cleaning. Regardless, we ended up with some very nice filets that will be supper tonight. I am going to fix fish, hushpuppies, corn on the cob, okra and home made tarter sauce. Kim, my friend from work, gave us some tomatoes, okra, green beans and potatoes form her garden. I have to remember next year when we have our garden to make sure I repay her and Don for the veggies they have given us when we were unable to have a garden this year. That and the fish she let us catch will feed us for several meals. I actually plan on making leather britches out of the beans and drying the apples that Don and Johnny gave us as well.

We visited with Don for awhile and took them some eggs. They give us so much vegetables out of their garden, and now apples, that we give eggs in return for the kindness. When we got home we carried water and took our baths. I put the lamp on the table and worked on the jigsaw puzzle, which is not an easy thing by lantern light. Again it was super cool last night and very nice weather.

So it is Monday and today we see our attorney to get briefed before court tomorrow. I dread that and I dread court. Poor Chris is nervous about it as well. Just not knowing what will happen is killing us. Thank goodness we have Don and Johnny there for us. I hope it is over tomorrow. I just hope the whole thing is over with and we can move on finally. I will post as soon as I can to let everyone know the outcome. Please do send prayers and positive thoughts our way.

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Perrin spent the night last night. I sat on the porch and watched him play with glow sticks and chase kittens. It rained yesterday and we got fresh rain water. I LOVE being able to turn on the spigot of the barrel and wash my face and hands before bed. Don and Johnny gave us some apples and tomatoes yesterday in exchange for some eggs. I always love getting fresh veggies from them. I cannot wait until we get to have our garden next year. Perrin got my tickled this morning when he got in bed beside me and ask if it was night or morning. I told him it was morning and he said, No, the sky is still making that noise so it is night. It took me a long time to figure out what he was talking about. Finally I figured it out. It was still very early and the cicadas, tree frogs and crickets were still sounding off. All this time, Perrin thought they were noises from the sky, telling him it was night time. I think that is adorable!

Devin is having his birthday party tomorrow. He will be 6! WOW…6 years old. I am starting to feel a bit older as these grandkids are growing up. The boys both want me to take them to the Rainforest Café in Nashville and I hope this court stuff ends soon so I can plan a trip out there with them.

I have another banjo lesson today. I THINK I am doing better. I can play several songs without having to look at the tabs for every chord change. I am enjoying it and will even try to get a video this weekend sometime and post it of me playing Cripple Creek or Rocky Top or something…..like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star! ROFL!

We have the party tomorrow and then we are going to get some work done around the farm. I will have pics on Monday.

A special thanks to Don in Canada for being such a wonderful person and dear friend. And also to the folks at City-Data. Not sure what is going to happen with the thread there, but I hope most of you will get my DM’s over the next few days and will find your way here. Feel free to make an account here as well, you can make comments to the posts then.
