Chris finished the woodshed last week and we have started getting the wood chopped and put in it. We have a lot of trees cut down, we just need to get them cut up and put into the woodshed. He started clearing land as well and it is starting to look really good across the driveway from the house, into the woods. We sold the windows from the old house yesterday for $1000. That will certainly help on the down payment of the farm. Sickness is going around like crazy in the schools and where I work. So far we have been spared, but I began to wheeze last night and have a light sore throat this morning. I took some honey before and after breakfast this morning and will continue that and an herb concoction until it goes away. I have been ordered by my Doc to take a few days off work and I had planned to take off tomorrow, so it figures I would start feeling sick before I get a chance to go up to Santeetlah Creek for the day.

The weather is much cooler and that is so nice. We had just a few rough days in which I would have been glad to have a fan in the house, but for the most part, we made it through Summer OK. I realize it is not completely over yet, but the worst part I think has passed and we survived the heat. So now we prepare for Winter. I am looking forward to getting the garden plowed up and everything hauled over to the root cellar for Winter. I will be glad when we have a wood heater installed in the livingroom and know that things are secure and ready for the cold Winter months.

We still get strange looks from the neighbors when they pass by. Yesterday we were down at the Spring washing some clothes by hand and a few cars passed and did double takes at us. I don’t think most of them know that we live without electricity because there are power lines running to the house. But I am sure seeing us at the Spring getting food out of it, doing laundry and stuff makes them wonder.

We had a very good weekend. My health has not been too great lately. My Doc blames it all on the stress from the past year and wanted to put me in the hospital for exhaustion last week. I told him I was trying to come up with the down payment on the farm and could not sit in a hospital. I would not be able to rest in there and would come out worse off than when I went in. He actually agreed with me, but ordered me to take some time off work and NOT stay at the farm working on my day off. This weekend I did a few things around the house on Saturday, but spent time playing my banjo, visiting the Mennonite Market just down the road, getting a little shopping done and then we went to the County Fair with Amanda and Perrin. I sat on benches and watched Perrin and Chris ride every single ride that Perrin was tall enough to get on. It rained on us right before we went into the Carnival. Sunday morning I got up early and played the banjo on the porch in my rocking chair. I am learning a new song this week “Blackberry Blossom”. It is really a cute little song and so far I am doing pretty good with it. I have memorized Cripple Creek and Wildwood Flower and enjoy playing both of those. We cleaned house, finished my jigsaw puzzle and started another one, had a visit from my friend Joanna and her son Tsali.  They stayed for several hours and we had a very nice time together. Then we had to go get chicken feed and cat food and littler and all that wonderful stuff. It was nice to get back home and we had a good evening.

Tomorrow is supposed to be my day off work to leave home and relax all day. We are planning to go into Tellico, stop by the bakery and see our buddies there, grab some fresh bread and pastries then head up the river and across the Cherohala Skyway. We are planning to go up to Joyce Kilmer for a little while and then down to Santeetlah Creek, which is my favorite place on Earth, and spend the rest of the day on a blanket reading book or crocheting or something. We will start heading home right before dark and hopefully things will go well. I am already thinking of a million things I could get done around the farm or even here at work if I don’t take off, but I have promised my Doctor and MY family that I will take a day off and relax. Amazing the things some of us have to go through to relax and how stressful the thought of relaxing can be. LOL

So we are still doing OK and still enjoying our farm. It is beautiful and each day I find more and more things about it to love.

I have not been able to post too much lately. We are trying to get the rest of the down payment for the farm and well, I will just be glad when October is said and done so we can have this down payment behind us and there will not be that stress on us. We like 2500.00, well more like 2000.00 now. We have 5 weeks to come up with it. So….yeah…prayers are welcome!

As for things on the farm, we have been working around there getting things fixed, moved, accomplished as we can. The root cellar (root beer cellar as Perrin calls it) has been prepped and ready for its transformation. We moved all the firewood over near the woodshed, which is being finished today. We hauled a LOT of stuff off this weekend. We have cut trees and are beginning preparations for winter. I have been canning like crazy and storing food for winter as well. We had a hen die. I think an egg busted inside of her. It was one of my Reds so that upset me. Chris called today and he discovered another one of the old cedars full of honey bees. That makes two trees now. I am going to get an empty hive or two and put them out, just in case these bees swarm maybe I can get some in a hive. I won’t be able to get honey from these in the tree trucks, but by golly we have plenty of bees to pollinate the garden. I miss my bees and am thrilled that there are bees at the farm.

I plan to take some pics of the root cellar and the transformation, Chris is working on it with Don this week. I also have more pics around the farm to post as well. The weather is a bit cooler and it is so nice to be able to get out and get some things done without fear of heat exhaustion.

So pics will be up this week and a proper update of things we have managed to get done so far.

THE ENDING FINALLY

WE GOT OUR MONEY AND IT IS OVER! The money has made the change through various hands and is now sitting in my bank account via cash deposit so IT IS OVER! I never have to speak her name again, I never have to worry about the wood or the situation or what will happen or when….ever again! You have no idea how relieved I am. Honestly….there is no way to express my relief right now. Another great thing is that I honestly had the best attorney I could have ever hoped for. I was a bit shocked but not totally because I had anticipated my final bill to be high. I will not put numbers up but he was so touched about our case and what all happened that he has offered to cut our bill down to a minimal of what we really owe and allow us to make small payments on that for as long as we need to so that we can come up with the rest of the down payment on the farm and have the life we craved so deeply.

We got the phone call Friday that the money had been released to our attorney and he called to let us know it was in his hands. So we had a great weekend. We had dinner with Amanda Friday night. I have made a reconnection with two friends of mine from Minnesota that I have known form online now for about 15 years or so. My gosh it does not seem that long. We have always been in and out of touch for all those years and fate brought us back in touch a few months back. It is so nice and I just adore them. It is kind of funny how you can end up being that close to people you have never met in real life. But regardless, we are close. Saturday I called out there and talked an hour and a half to each of them. LOL I killed my phone battery and then turned around and killed Chris’ phone battery as well. But it was SO nice and we caught up on life. Yesterday we shared pics and we share Twitter and texts and it looks like they are going to make a trip out here to see how they like things and possibly move out my way. That will be amazing!

Saturday morning we went fishing. I did not particularly want to go fishing but Chris really did. We decided to go to a private lake and got a late start again. It was hot…so nasty, sweaty, awful hot. AN hour into fishing I was not happy, had not gotten a single bite and just wanted Chris to decide he was ready to go home. I ended up making my way to the only shade tree on the lake and decided I would throw out my line and at least cool off in the shade until I heard him ask if I was ready to leave. Well I ended up catching this fish.

I was pretty thrilled and the fight it gave me was great. It took my breath fighting that fish and getting it in and on the stringer. I tossed my line back out again and well, caught this fish.

I was super thrilled again and if it had not been so darn hot, I would have did a happy dance. I was looking forward to sitting down, drinking some water and relaxing. Then the end of my rod went down again and I caught this fish…

By this time I was exhausted from fighting with catfish this big. I tossed the line back out and before I could sit down the rod was being pulled into the lake. I was fighting the biggest one yet and it was giving a battle worth fighting. My rod was bent like crazy and I was reeling like a mad woman. Then I caught this one….

Yeah…that would be my head. The fish spit the treble hook back out at me and I was pulling so hard the sinkers smacked me right under the right eye and the strong went straight across my face as I felt the treble hook stick into my head. Chris was going to take it out and I told him to just cut the string and not take it out because it was so hilarious I had to go to Amanda’s so I could get a better picture of it to go with my fish stories. We got that done and I got the huge fish cleaned for supper tonight.

Yesterday was the first day that I got so hot I was unhappy. I have no clue what the heat index was yesterday but it was scorching cannot breath hotness. We were miserable! I tried to practice the banjo on the porch but with sweat dripping, it was impossible. We got all of the canning done and laundry done and I just wanted to find a cold place and sleep there. I washed off under the spigot from the rain barrel and then last night before bed I wet a rag in the cold Spring water and refreshed it as needed before I went to sleep. I guess we are going to have several weeks of real summer before we see any cooler weather. I can handle it I suppose, but I am looking forward to Fall.

This morning I got a text message from my friend Storym and thought it was my alarm on the phone. LOL We got up and got ready for work. It was Perrin’s first day at school. I was excited for him but was teary eyed at the thought of my baby trotting off to school. We went to Amanda’s and took a lot of pictures of the whole process. I just got a call not long ago that he did great and had a fantastic day! When I get home I will be cooking the catfish and I have a few things to wash and hang on the line as well. I suppose I will practice my banjo some and get a few other things done around the house.

IT IS OVER FOLKS! This battle has finally ended and I just do not know what to think knowing I will not have to go to bed tonight and worry myself to sleep about that darn check and what she is going to accuse me of next.

It is over.

Friday I spent the day in Nashville. I had to make the trip for work and did not get back into town until about 8pm. I was exhausted by the time I picked Chris up from Amanda’s and got home.  Saturday we ended up getting Perrin for the night. I always enjoy seeing him grab a book and get in my bed, he tells Chris “Papaw, will you read me a book that you had when you was a little boy?”  The lamp goes on and I get to hear several books being read to him before he makes his way to the feather bed in the floor and goes to sleep. I had one of those rare nights of waking up at 3am, wide awake, and not being able to go back to sleep. So I shut the door to the library, lit all the lanterns in the rest of the house and proceeded to carry water in and do a thorough cleaning. By late morning I was wiping down a few dozen eggs and getting them in the basket to sell. I cooked a good supper for Amanda and before I knew it the day was gone.

Apples, apples and well…more apples. Don and Johnny gave us more apples this past weekend. Chris climbed the tree and shook them down as Perrin ran as fast as he could and grabbed them up to put in the bucket. We ended up with more apples than I could imagine. After that, we picked beans. They were through with the garden and wanted us to pick the last of the tomatoes, okra and bag after bag of beans. We got to spend some time chatting and found out Andy is coming back from Washington in a few weeks for another visit. He will be staying for another two weeks and I am excited about that.

Yesterday we worked on apples. We now have gallons of juice, apple jelly, dried apples, apple leather, applesauce, and after today…apple butter as well. I have never seen so many apples. I cut apples up yesterday so much that I thought my hand was going to fall off. We did not stop until late last night and Chris is working on more today. We also will be starting all of the green beans today and have a few bushels of them to get done. I tell ya, this time of year there is little time for anything but canning. We needed to cut more wood also, but it has been too wet to be able to do that right now. So hopefully we will be doing that this weekend.

We had so many 5 gallon buckets of apples I lost count!

A sleep over

When I tell people how I live I often get strange looks and odd comments. People want to know how we keep things cold, what we do for entertainment, how we bathe, etc. The answers are simple and I tell them about the spring, my many books, and about wash cloths and buckets. When I tell them about the grandkids they gawk some more…

The kids love it here! Most of the week I will keep Perrin at the house with me, and he simply has a great time. We’ll play rather then watch TV, I’ll read him a book rather then play video games, and we’ll take turns telling each other stories. Well, that is what we do when he is not helping me with my chores or building something…. And on the rare occasions where he spends the night, it’s generally a good long sleep that he gets. A well deserved sleep at that. Running around playing in the yard can ware even a 4 year old out.

I remember back when we lived at the trailer and had a TV and a Playstation. Yeah, we would make it outside to play now and again, but that was generally in between movies and SSX Tricky. When it was time for sleep, the kids would stay up, sometimes for hours. That simply does not happen here at the broken house. At 9:00pm when it starts to get dark its often time for bed, and most of the time by 9:15 the house is filled with snoring.
